January 31st marked the first institute for NLC Orlando’s impressive and widely diverse group of 2015 fellows. We’ve got social entrepreneurs, public sector and non-profit gurus, educators, and, as one fellow describes himself, “a poet and a scientist.”
As this is only the NLC’s second year in Orlando, the organization isn’t yet widely known in Central Florida. Understandably, many new fellows weren’t sure what to expect as they ascended the elevator on Saturday morning.
Purple, Rock, Scissors, a digital creative agency in downtown Orlando, served as the perfect backdrop to get creative juices flowing. The laid-back nature of the office allowed our fellows to let their guard down, share, and connect with each other quickly. Still, the authentic entrepreneurial spirit of the space got everyone motivated, excited, and focused on NLC’s mission.
The man who truly drew that passion out of the group was Miami’s chapter co-director, Kubs Lalchandani, who led the activities and talks throughout the weekend. His openness, charisma, and impressive personal and professional story set an example. Kubs made such an impression in his two short days, the fellows presented him with a signed card from all of them, thanking him for representing the NLC in such an inspiring way.
As the close of the weekend previewed NLC initiatives capstones, fundraising, and future institute themes - fellows were left with a clear picture of what’s in store for the next few months.
